#DRDS Ep. 49 Jamie Broadnax of BGN on Shonda Rhimes Effect, Empire and More
This week on the podcast we have Jamie Broadnax of Black Girl Nerds. A great place nerd out on a variety of topics, some great blogs to read, and also recently relaunched her podcast. She was recently in Atlanta for Dragoncon. From the looks of things it’s great place for blerds like herself to unite. Jamie is renowned TV enthusiast and a big supporter of everyone’s favorite show runner, Shonda Rhimes. If you are into comics in general she has some great takes on those as well. We share fandom of Marvel in general but was surprised to learn about her love of Gambit of X-Men. Me being from Michigan has always given me an affinity  for Wolverine but to each their own.
Besides going ahead and outing myself as Dragon Ball Z fan, I wanted to discuss some of the Fall TV lineup and some things in the entertainment in general. Now you can say what you want, but I feel like 2015 TV feeling the full Shonda Effect. Between one of my favorite shows “How to get away with Murder”, “Scandal” and “Grey’s Anatomy” she is running Thursdays on ABC. Shondaland doesn’t like the sound of diversifying TV  anymore maybe because she doesn’t have to.  Since Rhimes broke in the amount of color we see on TV especially network tv has increased. Not only in just the cast period but the star roles as well. In the last few years we have seen Empire, Blackish, Power, Mr. Robinson, The Carmichaels, and a few more really see benefit of networks going all in on the fact that black people watch TV too.
Now when I say Ms. Broadnax is is into TV that might be an understatement. It was hard to keep up with all of the show she is watching. Mr. Robot was one place where we crossed paths and is one of the only shows I’m watching and waiting for but I have started in on some others. I ask her about her visit to The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, Spider-Man as Miles Morales, and get her suggestions on what else watch.
