#DRDS 58: Best Rapper Alive + Evolution of Music Videos + Colin Kaepernick w/ Keith Nelson Jr

Wudup Doe?!

This week on the podcast we get up with Keith Nelson Jr. (@JusAire)of Digital Trends to talk a lot of Hip-Hop and Colin Kaepernick. We look into why Colin is still a story. Then with VMAs doing their thing again makes up look at how relevant the MTV production still is in 2016.  We end the podcast by discussing who is the ‘Best Rapper Alive’? We look into the current criteria, the old criteria, and does anyone care?

Colin Kaepnick and the Star Spangled News Cycle (2:33)

We begin by addressing the NFL’s Colin Kaepernick situation that is still having a ripple effect in the news cycle. Stories like this don’t stay around that long in the Twitter age but because it’s attached to football, it becomes more relevant than ever. Flags can be very powerful. Ask anyone down south about that ol’ Dixie flag.

MTV VMAs and The Evolution of Music Videos (10:33)

With the VMAs just passing we looked into how the music video has changed and evolved over the years. The award show has lost is relevance in 2016 because of the consumption habits of videos and actual purpose a music video has.  No longer part of a carefully plotted campaign to pump music sales. They are now part of a streaming conscious that promotes music, tour dates, merchandise, and other brands that artist have partnered with.  Beyonce has shook up things with a full length HBO movie for a music video that was the follow up to the “Formation” video, Super Bowl Performance, and tour announcement.

Who Is The ‘Best Rapper Alive’ and Does Anyone Care? (22:21)

We then discuss who is the ‘Best Rapper Alive’ and is it the same standards as it was 10 years ago. I conclude its about being the ‘Hottest Rapper Alive’ because the top artist aren’t interested in crown. By default we at Kendrick Lamar and Drake the two sides of the coin.

To decide we look back at previous owners of the crown. The most recent wearer of the crown was Lil Wayne. We got nostalgic over what could be a golden age of lyrical Hip-Hop. 2005-2009 had some of the best lyrical performances to date. Keith thinks that Lupe Fiasco had a better two year run from 05-07 .I would have to side with Lil Wayne 07-09 that included Da Drought 3 and No Ceilings Part 1.
