Is This Proof Michael Jordan Will Always Be The Greatest?

The Last Dance takes place around a season that happened over 20 years ago. Anyone under 30 is unlikely to have a clear sense of what MJ was. Since then we have had Kobe and LeBron be considered in the conversations but never over Jordan. This documentary although it is more of Michael Jordan’s memoirs and less hard-hitting investigational journalism, the documentary does a great job of setting the tone of how much far and ahead of the game he was and the mastery of the sport made by far the greatest basketball player many had ever seen.

In 1993 Michael Jordan had gotten to the point where there was nothing left for him to overcome. No more Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, or Detroit Pistons to get in his way of success. He vanquished his contemporaries, Clyde Drexler and Charles Barkley, in the NBA Finals and did something that none of the 80’s legends ever did, win three championships in a row.

In ESPN’s “The Last Dance” Episode 7, they dive deep into Michael Jordan’s first retirement 1993 to go play baseball. The biggest question that had the media twisting itself to the edge over absurd was why? The documentary looks at theories around why, mostly around gambling. They ranged from a double-secret suspension to the death of his father being part of a gambling debt.

MJ goes on to explain that the business of being Michael Jordan every day was wearing on him and his father’s death was just another thing that weighed on him. He says baseball because his father wanted to see him play but I have another theory.

Jordan ran out of basketball players and had moved on to athletes. The problem was the attempt was a bust so he will probably never admit it so you can’t put him below the two he was chasing. Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders.

Bo Jackson entered the NFL in 1987, played for the Los Angles Raiders, and made a Pro Bowl in 1990. He also played for Major League Baseball from 1986-1994, most notably the Chicago White Sox in 1991 and 1993

1993 almost produces a Bo Jackson vs Deion Sanders World Series.

Michael Jordan is described by more one word than any other.

Competitiveness.

Does this not fuel Michael Jordan to be the greatest athlete of all time because the best basketball player is not enough? Was he chasing the title “greatest athlete ever”?

This is speculation but it would not surprise me if Michael never admits it because he didn’t make too the majors and didn’t love baseball enough, or even the fact that he could not dominate as he always could.
