If you are anywhere on the passionate NBA fan spectrum, the last 30 days has supercharged your interest. The transactions have dominated the last couple of weeks. Before everyone was switching teams willingly, there were a few trades that happened, mostly around the NBA Draft and of course, that was fresh off a Toronto Raptors’ win in the NBA Finals. This week on the podcast Keith Nelson Jr. joins us once again to run down all the events that went down in the league.
This may have been the week that changes NBA history when we look back. Kevin Durant aka the Easy Money Sniper goes down from an Achilles injury in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Before that game, he was a player that in theory could have changed the course of the series. Unfortunately, his run was short and it opened the window for Kawhi and the Toronto Raptors to take the NBA championship.
Within four days of Toronto claiming the throne, the Lakers stole the show by trading for Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans for Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and three first-round picks. It wasn’t really a surprise since we all knew his desire to play with LeBron from the events that took place earlier this year. The Lakers proceeded to clear up room for another big piece. There was much speculation about who that might be but we would have to wait for two before we find out.
The #1 pick was nowhere near a mystery. Zion Williamson was destined for the Pelicans from the moment they won the lottery. New Orleans came out of the draft with a brand new look and so did a few teams such as the Atlanta Hawks and the Memphis Grizzlies. A few other trades were made but it seems like it was only setting table for what came next
On June 30th the collective NBA community picked up their devices and remotes and found out that Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant both were bound to be Brooklyn Nets. Jimmy Butler was being traded to Miami, Kemba Walker goes to Boston and Woj drop so many bombs it made Funk Flex jealous.
After the dust settled from the transaction frenzy, everyone held their collective breath to see where Kawhi Leonard would sign. After much misinformation from the likes of Chris Broussard and others on the Twitter machine, the Claw chose the Los Angles Clippers. Not only was that was a pseudo-surprise but no one was expecting Paul George to join him. Come to find out this was move orchestrated by Kawahi himself. Keith Nelson Jr. says he “Beyonce-d free agency” and left everyone in awe at his ability to keep all details secret and putting together a situation that is built around what he does best.
This upcoming NBA season will be one to remember and I anticipate NBA League Pass subscriptions to be at an all-time high. Almost every game will have some interest points for basketball fans and we couldn’t get started any sooner.
