Migos Culture Review – Mixtape Bangers that Burnout Fast

Fresh off a #1 song Migos drop their 2nd studio album “Culture”. The North Atlanta trio is new to some but a staple here in Atlanta and among trap music fans everywhere. What they lack in pure lyric fire power they make up with pure originality born of Gucci Mane’s influence in post Future society. Wherever you land on less substantive music, there is a level appreciation you can have for the way the trio has influenced the rap game with every popular rapper trying it. can piece a song together and make it catchy ass song.

Best songs: All Ass, Kelly Big On Big, Out Yo Way

Most skippable: Deadz, Call Casting, Slippery

Overall Score 6/10

In 2 sentences:

The Migos have honed their sound to a new level. A little clunky in the beginning but smooth’s out at the end.

So last week I wrote a review on this album and this week that review no longer exist. So I am going to get right to it. The Migos Culture is good collection of songs. Unlike the other reviews that have given them high praise, this project is a stepping stone to a better Migo’s project. Clearly they had too much control. Coach K is acting like Coach Calipari because he rolled the ball out and let them play. Giving them an emphasis on showing up and showing out, the album is a driving force for their live show hustle.

This album is more of a heavily promoted mixtape than something that looks for critical acclaim. The qualifier people are putting on them is that this isn’t a super lyrical group which is true but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t judge them on a musical level. Let’s be honest about what’s going on here. They make good music but this is a hustle. I’m judging it on those two facts.

Quick Takes on Culture

I will say I was surprised by the abilities of Takeoff because of the recent Offset pumping and the superstar in the making that is Quavo that tend to overshadow what he is capable of. The current single T-shirt that samples the Dem Franchize Boyz White Tee, gives a taste of what he can do.

The subject matter is limited and that is being nice. If this was 2005, the label would have made the Migos make some songs that covered some other areas like love, some coming of age tales and so on. It’s just club songs.

If you told me Travis Scott co-wrote this album, I wouldn’t have been surprised. If you listen to Kelly Price which features Scott, it sounds more like four person group.

Overall this is a cool album that make good driving music for a couple of weeks.
