#DRDS Podcast Ep. 73 Russell Westbrook is MVP For The Narrative, LeBron Is For The NBA

Russell Westbrook has broken the record for triple doubles in a season, will average one,  got the Thunder in the NBA Playoffs, and looks like obvious candidate for MVP. But when you take a microscope to this season LeBron  might be more deserving than you think.

Who is your NBA MVP? It’s more than likely that you probably have Russell Westbrook, James Harden, or maybe even Kawhi Leonard. The most popular choice being Westbrook and after Sunday’s performance I have to be honest with you it’s hard to deny what that is doing. Harden is doing some things that I wasn’t aware of him being capable of. Lebron has a strong case for NBA MVP and because of the narrative it’s being under appreciated. Nobody has a grip on what is the actual criteria but I hear the same thing. Isn’t the MVP rewarding winning, is it about individual performance and body of work over a season? Isn’t that what LeBron has given us? Are we rewarding the narrative boosted by unreal numbers or the pure performance of what one has done on the court?
We fell for it. We let Russell Westbrook play up everything he could to keep his name in the media’s mouth. From the time Kevin Durant left for the Golden State Warriors, we turned him into a one man show and he played right into it.  Around every corner, from “that’s cute” to the NBA All-Star warm up, Westbrook has amplified the reasons for him to average a triple double and made his shortcomings within efficiency a footnote of the conversation.  You can cite the fact he leads the league in PER but it seems kinda flawed when you look at how many times he was the opposite of efficient meanwhile LeBron is moving on a level of his 2012 season, where I claimed he wanted to be the most efficient player of all time.
I admit my view is swimming upstream because the LeBron case is taking hits on the recent events and the fact that the Cavs are cruising until the playoffs. Still I can’t reside the fact that he’s owed an MVP and holding the entire Eastern Conference on his back.  The story doesn’t fit for him to win but I he’s the most valuable to the NBA on the court as a business.
