#DRDS Ep. 47: Vann “FiveFifths” Newkirk II of the NWAP on Mr. Robot, #BlackLivesMatter, and Why J. Cole Needs to Grow Up

Wudup  people!

How did that fantasy team do week one? Didn’t mean to make you sad.

Anyway…

This week on the podcast I have a guest whose work I really admire. I have Vann “@FiveFifths” Newkirk II from the NWAP (Negroes With A Podcast), Seven Scribe, and a freelance contributor to many sites including Grantland. I discovered Vann on Twitter with a couple thoughtful tweets. I ended up finding the podcast NWAP that he does with three of his partners, @Smooth_Orator @taut_7 and @negroid_android.

Update: Now a staff writer for The Atlantic

They discuss many social issues that Black America is still dealing with on a day to day. They bring very different and educated viewpoints on every subject they speak on. Being a Morehouse grad, Vann know quite a bit about Atlanta and even someone smart as him like Future’s music.

5:48 Mr. Robot Season 1 and Carolina Panthers Preview

mr-robot

We covered a lot of ground in an hour. We started with polarizing USA production “Mr. Robot”. Anyone close to me know when it comes to tv I have pretty much ignored it outside of sports. But this show right here? I can’t get enough of it. FiveFifths wrote a post about it on Grantland that shined some light on the way these shows are consumed.

“In eight straight hours it’s easier to note that Slater’s industrial-strength dadcore gear doesn’t really change, that Tyrell was slowly being styled into Stockholm Patrick Bateman, and that Elliot’s assumed “good guy” qualities were increasingly delusions of an unreliable narrator. In other words, you can crack the source code of this shit with on-demand, Reddit, and lots of coffee.”

Keeping things current I asked him about his home team the Carolina Panthers. Once again Cam Newton is going into the season with pretty much no help on offense and you already know if they backslide he’ll be getting a bunch of the blame. We discussed the relationship Cam has with the media and how this is nothing new. So RGIII get ready.

29:20 #BlackLivesMatter vs. Hillary Clinton and The Centralized Movement Debate

After a healthy dose of pop culture we import NWAP for a majority of the podcast. We got into how they got started and a issue people could be jumping to conclusion on.  The Hillary Clinton and #BlackLivesMatter video that has divided some. The main issue Hillary was pointing out was the lack of policy points. I feel what she is saying because in my eyes the movement hasn’t alway made it most clear at the times. It alway seems to get fed into the media as more of a general purpose instead of precise issues that they question politicians with. We also touched on the centralized vs. spread out movement and how the black church is still needed  it to wrap that up.

Vann says America and the republican party deserve Donald Trump. The dude is a joke. Right now its all fun and games but it’s getting a little too close to being real.

52:30 Does J. Cole Need to Grow Up?

j cole

We wrap things up by talking by shooting the breeze on Hip-Hop, most notably J.Cole. FiveFifths has been characterized as being a J. Cole hater but he clears that up a here. His main problem with Cole World is that since he first hit the scene, his music and lyrics have not matured. J. Cole ,now 30, dropped his first mixtape “The Come Up” in 2007.  Fifths contest that he’s still the same person in his raps in 2015.
